Ever since I’ve started writing about Indian Idol, the number of page views in a week have tripled! Yes, That’s right. That’s not all, I’ve got some new commentators, and more fans have joined for email subscription. Last week, I missed writing an Indian Idol post, and the page views just plummeted! What was most interesting was that people left comments about the new episode in the old blog posts! It was interesting to see people actually coming back to look for content, one of my first. Never had such good appreciation on the blog.
One of them, an inspiration to composing this blog post. Disha‘s colleague, a blogger is impressed with the blog, and wanted tips on how he could make his blog more popular. That was a first too, I generally give advice even if it is not asked for, so how was I going to refuse this one? What follows in the blog are a few points to help bring more traffic into the blog, all of it from the personal experience of blogging for close to 3 years now! Some of the stats of the previous few weeks, and a final report at the end of June: (Click to get a bigger image)
Before Indian Idol posts, Love of my life was one of the most visited blog posts, why? because it had content to do with Love, something everyone wants 🙂 Initially most of the traffic came in from people wanting to copy the picture on the blog. Slowly the crowd started leaving comments and the popularity to this date is as it was when I first published this post. Gotta give credits to wordpress for indexing my page better, for everyone who is already a blogger or is wanting to be a blogger, choose wordpress, it has better visibility on search engines and it’s much more simpler to use than blogger and the themes are excellent thanks to the wordpress users who do it.
Lesson learnt: People are always looking for pictures, if not for content search, a picture search can land more people into your blog. From that day on, I’ve always tried to use at least one picture in every post and it actually makes the post look more beautiful to look at 🙂
Every heard of this term called “Back Links” or “Link Sharing” etc? No? Well, back links are links to your blog post that you leave somewhere other than the blog itself. The more places your link is available the more visibility your blog will get. Back links are also important when it comes to search indexing. Google bots will index you better, and you’ll have more traffic. Link sharing is when you ask someone to link of your blog on his blog, and link his blog on your blog.
If you left a comment on cricinfo, with a link of your blog, what you are doing is that you are enjoying the SEO(Search engine optimization) of the parent website. Now Cricinfo has the best SEO in all of cricket website, so when a user searches for something and it happens to be a part of your comment, cricinfo will get your comment on top of the search results and there is a good chance that the reader will visit your blog too 🙂 Now, do not leave a link without an actual valid comment, otherwise the link will only rot in the spam filters of the website!
Also back-link old blog posts when ever required. A post on Tatasky may have reference to the old post, link it. What you are doing is engaging the users to read more blogs! The linked blog may have some more reference links, and there is a good chance that the user will read that too 🙂
Lesson learnt: Start linking the blog everywhere possible. Leave a comment with a signature having link to blog, send an email with link to blog, just put it everywhere!
Have multiple blogs? I write for Royal Challengers Bangalore as a fanatic fan, Spiritz and more as a photoblogger. Why shouldn’t i let my readers know of this? What I do is only post the introduction of the post on here and link the rest of the entry to the blog on the other website. It build your reputation as a blogger, and the users actually also know that you are talking about stuff for real!
I rarely did share new posts on facebook and twitter, but that’s another option to make more people want to read it. Some people like to share it as a note, that’s not going to get people to your blog! They’d read all of it on facebook, and comment there only. It could be the best discussion on a blog you ever had, but two years after, you’ll only see it as a post that got a few comments! Reduce such posts, only post the introduction and link the rest of it to the blog!
What also makes the blog more search friendly is pictures. What I have learnt from my experience is that, people visiting my blog are generally there because of the pictures, which is why you’ll notice I have a separate section called “Funny Pictures”.
Every blog post also carries a picture of relevance mostly picked from Google! So If people search for “Rahul Dravid”, a picture from RCB should show before any other site. Now if Google indexes a picture everyday with the name of Rahul Dravid from RCB, then it will place RCB on a higher index making it the more relevant site to find pictures of Rahul Dravid!
If you are on wordpress, add as many relevant tags as possible, these I guess are also used as meta tags on each page which helps index the page better. Try and register your blog url under a number of website directory sites like Indi Blogger etc, What you essentially do is get to use their SEO 🙂
But what regularly increases your chances of increasing the traffic is regular content update, it can be through new blogs, or modifying content on other pages. So have loads of pictures, leave links wherever possible, and work on your profile to get the maximum out of the search engines!
