Indian Idol 5 – Sashi emilminated, Who is to be blamed?

Shashi-SumanI usually don’t feel attached to any contestants of a reality show, but this weeks elimination episode of Indian Idol season 5 did find me dumb struck! It was because one of my favorites, Sashi, a 20 year old from Patna was announced eliminated from the show. I never really have even made an effort to reach out for the mobile phone to make a vote, but at the end of it all i didn’t know what to say. It was a moment when my emotions were taking control of my thoughts. What stopped that thankfully, was an array of stupid comments from the judges.. More about it as we go on..

Sashi’s elimination was a shocker especially after the kind of singing Tia, another 16 year old who has a good looking face, innocent looks and a mediocre singing experience; or Swaroop, a 20 year old from the village of Rajasthan who can do only one kind of singing during the previous galas. But who is to blame? But before we get there, here is one of the best performances of Sashi in Indian Idol:

Sashi – O meri Jaan – Pritam Special

The Judge put it on the audience, and here’s what they said.. (Well, of the least I remember, I can’t find the video)
Anu Malik: The Audience have made a very bad decision. You are letting a big singer go away..
Saleem Merchant: We are sorry that Sashi has to go. Don’t know how public voting works.
Sunidhi Chauhan: I really fail to understand what the public needs. Come and tell us what you need, this decision is bad.

I guess the judges were also going through an emotional outcry when they made these comments. Even we as Janta(voting audience) don’t know who is leading and who is not. We as Janta only like somebody because it is the way you show them to us. We as Janta don’t know which contestant is leading. We as Janta don’t like to vote because the voting is not toll free or even if we do vote we don’t know if the voting process is transparent. Even though you keep repeating that the voting process is processed by Ernst and young we as Janta would never find it real unless you have a huge screen that shows the vote count increasing after every vote in real time.

There have been a lot of reality shows where the media has been able to expose the reality behind the reality shows. There was this one time when the contestants of ‘Big Boss’ were seen enjoying the climate of Khandala when they were supposed to be locked inside the house; and this one time when Rakhi Sawant and his ex-current-ex uffff-it’s complicated boyfriend Abhishek who accused the producers of the reality show ‘Nach Baliye’ of forging the voting process. Yes, a media person was able to vote for one contestant and not for the other. Both of these may have been TRP gathering stunts, but both are also the harsh reality of the reality shows.

Why is the Janta wrong in thinking of a forgery in this case too? Why could the producers not made this possible, none of the audience member are going to know about it. Why can’t a vote count of 10000 be change to 1000? It’s all in the game and which is why i don’t let emotions override, and anyway how is anybody winning an Indian Idol going to change my life at all? But all that we care about is the voting process being fair, especially when we pay ‘premium’ charges!

The producers, The Judges and everybody involved with the show including the audience stand to be blamed. The judges for creating melodrama about one contestants performance and completely the opposite for another. Please be fair, the only way to do this is that the judges nominate the bottom 4 after every gala just like they pick the performer of the day and put them for public voting.

The producers, for scripting everything in lieu of better TRP’s. I wouldn’t really blame the audience for votes, everybody has their favorites and wants to help the contestant continually entertain us. I blame the audience for getting stupidly emotional over everything, It’s just a show, nothing is going to change in your life. Just enjoy it and sleep well.

Now that my favorite is gone, do I stop watching the show? No! Another one takes his place. I’ve always enjoyed Sreeram’s singing, and will continue enjoying so. I’d want to see him win Indian Idol, but again wouldn’t be feeling bad if he’s eliminated. It’s just a show and not a moment when i’d hang myself. You deserve to die if you have a temparament that you cannot control! Who Sreeram? Check him out:

Sreeram – Aaja Aaja – Asha Bhosle / RD Burman Special

Sreeram – Khwaja Khwaja – Lamha (Bipasha Basu, Sanjay Dutt, Kunal Kapoor)

Sreeram – Breathless – Shankar Ehsaan Loy Special – WOW!

Until next time I have an emotional moment.

BUT IS ANYTHING GOING TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS?

  2. June 30, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Hi Gail, There can be nothing done about this, except for us stop watching the show.
If I’m to think further, people only vote for contestants who they think are “going to be eliminated” because of a weak performance to save them, and believe that the other contestants who have done well will always get the top votes.

There should have been an online voting system in place, because people don’t want to be spending money for every single vote they send, only then will we know who gets the maximum support! Sashi is still the favourite, but there can be nothing done about hs elimination!

Now time for everyone to think what they are exactly doing. I feel that the regional feeling dominates the performers’ performance even though their performance lacks quality. So sad. I guess this is thing which is saving many poor performers.

    July 1, 2010 at 11:11 am

Nitu, Yes regional voting seems to be creating a bias. The problem however is also with the number of votes that can be made from one number, which is unlimited. So say, Tia’s father is a rich man and he can afford to spend 10k every time there is a voting, he’d definetely make sure she ends up in the top every single time. The voting process is not transparent, unless that is done we will have to witness more shocks like these! All we can do is wish luck to the remaining contestants!

    Well Mr.Kunal
That doesn’t really mean that Tia’s father really bribes the show producers. This is all a game of votes. Many rich people have come and gone in reality shows and that does not mean that because of being poor, one went out. We love Shashi for his singing and although its true that he was anyway better and much more deserving to stay in the show, you must not blame another contestant for this. I do strongly condemn this act of yours.

It was really shocking to watch Sashi getting eliminated when poor performers like Tia, Swaroop & Naushad are still in Top 8. The voting process is all bogus as there is no transparancy & no one knows how they derive to such calculations. In comparison other singing reality shows in different channels are much better as atleast they showed state wise break-up of votes & which contestant was leading in votes but in Indian Idol I think the worst singer wins the title coz it is not for singing talent it is for looks hence Tia hardly comes is bottom threee after singing badly each time. Therefore except for Abhijeet Sawant none of the indian idol has made a mark till now. So this time also dont be surprised if in next elimination a talented singer like sreeram gets eliminated these are done just to get TRP’s then in the end there will be wild card entry and some drama by Anu Malick & co. We are bored of such dramas each time …..

Shashi, you are a rock star for me… You have been deliberately evicted because you were the most strong contender amongst all. You really deserve to be in Top 3…. Up till now such kind of elimination never affected me but this time I really felt that regional voting & public voting is simply biased. This practice shall be stopped..But Shashi you are a true winner because of versatility in your singing… You must come back with veto power or wild card entry, only then the finale of Indian Idol 5 would be worth watching between you & Shreeram… That would be an event which will spell bound the judges & audience & they will at least once regret for your so early eviction.. All the very best to you Shashi… You are a winner for me…

Shashi ka elimination bahut galat hai. I m shocked jab Shashi ka naam liya gaya its very wrong. Elimination Tia ya Swaroop ka hona chahiya tha bcz Tia ka har performance weak raha hai but janta use emotionally vote karke safe kar rahi hai n Swaroop sirf fock singing k liye hi fit hai nothing more. But Shashi me har khubi hai like good looking, smart n dashing personality n a best performer than all contestant. He is an allrounder n versetile singer. But u dnt worry Shashi tmhe es se v badi kamyabi milegi tab janta ko apne galat voting knowledge pe pachhtawa hoga. U rockeddddddd Shashi so dekhna ek din tmhri ginti v Shaan, Sonu Nigam Shankar Mahadewan n world’s top singers me hogi n tmhe v dher sari shohrat milegi. Wish u all d very best n God blesssssssss u. Have a nice day everyday n take care. Luv uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu our rockstar.

Ghalya, I’ve never said that Sashi got eliminated because he was rich or poor, What i have been trying to say is that the family close to any non-deserving contestant may have the money or the power to garner more votes, while a person like sashi may not. What I’ve been trying to tell is that the whole voting system is faulty, and then Anu Malik blames the janta for throwing out sashi.

If you read the blog again, I’ve mentioned that – people are only trying to save contestants who they think have a chance of getting eliminated while they think that everyone will vote for the good contestant. There can be 100 other reasons, but if the format is changed a little bit, I’m sure the deserving contestants will always win a reality show!

Neelakshi: If the voting process is Bogus, I see Sreeram getting into the top 3 without a doubt. If he’s eliminated too, You and I would just stop watching the show! They don’t want you to do that. Even other shows that show the number of votes may be bogus, none can be proven as a fool proof method.
The best way to get rid of all this nonsense is to try what the star plus guys did during chotte superstars i guess where Anvesha won, was the judges choose the bottom 4, and out of that one goes. But I guess we wouldn’t be talking about the elimintion if Sashi wasn’t eliminated, which is what the producers want.

Simran, Thanks for the comment. I haven’t favoured anybody here, i was just trying to look at the different aspects, I never did want to say tia’s father is rich or sashi is ppor, these personal angles of anybody’s life should be kept away from the show. I just used them as an example so that people would relate better.

Platform ticket sirf een ghante ke liye valid hoti hai, par lagta hai aapne kisi gareeb logon ko platform ke bridge ke neeche, waiting hall mein, platform ke bench pe, kutton ke saath kabhi nahi dekha? Aap ya tho kabhi train mein gayi hi nahi, ya aapne aankhien bandh kar li hain.

I haven’t favoured sashi because he is poor or is a struggler, i favoured him because with contestants like tia and swaroop in the game it wasn’t fair for Sashi to leave! I’m just questioning the voting process, after all it’s just a reality show, that isn’t going to change the way you or I live our lives!

Also, its a request that Shashi should came back & there should not be a height of more injustice in Indian Idol 5.

Will these comments reach the right ears, so that we can see Shashi again competing ? You know there is one point which everyone is missing out – even if Tia by hook or crook gets votes and become idol 5, do you really think anyone will even give her chance to sing, if she is not good …. even though the big banner claiming to give the contract, might just give here teeneeweenee stuff. Only versatile singer will survive the challenges. Imagine if Sreeram and Shashi bagging good meaty generes to sing and someone who becomes the idol5, does not get good opportunity to sing… where will be Indian Idol program’s positioning ? πŸ™‚ …. Relax. Hard work of these talented singers will never get wasted.

Well today they have eliminated the finest singer present on the show and tommorow they will eliminate Sreeram, this is how Indian Idol works. They did it in the case of Amit Paul who was a brilliant singer and a clear winner, basically no one knows what is going on behind the scenes but i personally think that it is high time we stop watching the show because it is a disgrace that people like TIA and NAUSHAD are still there just because of there looks and can’t even sing properly. There is surely some politics going on behind the scenes.

It was really a poor performance of gala at Indian Idol’s platform & when the time has come to select best singers… We are finding for Desh ki Awaz…. So performance should be of higher level……..

Yesterday I was missing Shashi….. He would have sung so well amongst those remaining singers…

  28. July 6, 2010 at 11:00 pm

    Hi Kunal,

This is just a popular TV show and the most popular one will win not the best. Look at the politicians who are getting elected, don’t we have better people there. This time Indian Idol brought in some good talent and I am happy for that and watching the programme after three years gap, but if Tia wins then I will take three more years before watching the programme and vote for the contestants.

Venkat, Well said! It’s just a TV Show afterall, and with not many of the TV audience voting we shouldn’t really care. It’s however humane to see that good talent is being wasted in the hands of a really bad voting process. The Judges show their distrust in the audience, but never have done anything to try and change the process. Everyone in this industry is money minded, they are using simple people wit dreams to turn their millions into billions. My sympathies with everyone contestant for going through something like this!

Chandra, When a judge says something and the other disagrees, it’s an opinion, everyone is allowed to have one. Bias is when you keep telling only good things about a person despite bad performances which Anu Malik is obviously been doing, first with Yashraj and now with Tia.

She has got her own talent and I like her voice. But s’times she lacks the punch or “dum” or wtever ,we say, in her voice. But I feel that she gets many votes because shez a Gujju!!!
