Photon Xpressions – The Shark blog!
A tag line that ‘pissed off ‘most of our competition at the recently concluded events @ #pho10N. An event that promised fun filled evening(s) came as a sweet surprise to many as Photon entered into the 11th year since inception in 1999, of which I have been a part since June 2007. All employees, Some 1000 plus, were divided into 4 groups, The Black Panthers, The Red Rhinos, The Blue Sharks and The Yellow Tigers.
The event was managed by a professional event management company who ensured participation from every single member in the team. I’m a proud Blue Shark as i give you insight into the fun filled evenings at Photon.
Day 1 – Tuesday – 30th June 2009
The employees receive the final email (after a few teasers) confirming the event on the 4th of July at the Don Bosco School Auditorium, Egmore, Chennai. Attached was a sheet with each one’s name marked with Blue, Black, Red and Yellow to identify them in separate teams. The buzz had been created!!
Friends cum colleagues started discussing which team they were on. Also listed were the captain and the vice captains for each team, I found my name under the Blue Sharks (I wish I could captain something in my life!). I found myself lonely as most of my close mates were on separate teams 😦 All events in the past were small and rarely had anything to do with teams, so this one was different but not buzzing enough to become impatient about).
Day 2 – Wednesday – 1st July 2009
I logged in early in the morning, thanks to the chill wind outside (Chennai??!?Chennai is gone cold in the mornings in the last few weeks) had a good half hour sleep on my way to office.
What did i do then? Oh, You really care? Went around the floor searching for my chair which some guy in the night shift used. You know what’s funny, The chair is in a different place every single day, Are people fighting for my chair? As long as the chair can take it, that’s okay! I switch off lights as I look for my chair, I hate people who leave lights on! I find my chair and log into my email. Didn’t I switch on my computer? Not every detail can be discussed, If i hate people who leave lights on, you should have known that I’m a person who hates people who leave computers on!! Yes, I’m talking about you Ramaiah (Murugan) 😛
All this confusion, and I’m lost! So I login to my email, fix issues that the client reported after i had logged off the previous evening . It’s 9, there is something new, Not the theme, Here’s an email that wants all the participating teams to solve some brain teasers. Wow! Nice wake up call 🙂 It felt like I was answering the written test that Photon gave me when they were at my college, recruiting. The Answers were tricky, but good fun to solve.
Compose Mail – Type Answers – Explain why – Send! Stop stop stop.. Why am I sending it to all on the list? Select only the captain and the vice captain email’s and send! Done, What now? ha, “Did you get all the answers?” enquired LVS, and I realized that I was not the only one to have got them right but I hope I was the fastest. Later in the day, Smitha, the PMO queen pings me, “U r a blue shark?”..”Err.. Yes!”.. “Guess what, I’m your new coordinator”..”Nahiiiii” 😛
The evening was painted blue as the Blue Sharks won most of the team events hands down. The results showed a healthy lead in front of the other teams that would help us win on the final day. The point system in which the winner got 100 pts and the rest 75 pts ensured that the teams stayed in competition
Teams had begun cheering themselves and ‘boo’ed the other teams. It was time when the teams made winning strategies. The teams had to publicize themselves the next day, the winner :100 points. Ideas please, Ideas.. In walked Madhu with his crazy thoughts, Why not we break computers?!? He’d already asked the systems people for computers that were a throw away. I personally liked the idea, but the team decided not to as we didn’t want to look like Sreesanth who did crazier things on the field.
Thankfully we settled on a few ideas that looked real and eye-catching. It was a day when I interacted with a lot of people who I wouldn’t have spoken otherwise, Something that I don’t regret!
Day 3 – Thursday 2nd July 2009
The brain teaser 3 had arrived, I was on to it immediately as there were not many tasks that needed my help. They were a trickier than the last one. One of which was to decipher a three letter word, the key to which was a simple cipher.
I know the post is too long and boring, so here’s the cipher if you want to crack it.
” POF UIPVTBOE QMBZUIJOLT ”
The answer to the solution is a simple key, If u have the key you have the answer. Comment if you’ve cracked the answer.
Teams got busy executing plans they made for the campaign. On our campaign list was a Beautiful Rangoli, a band to ensure full visibility of the blue Sharks, blue balloons all over the place, banners, posters and funny quotes, taunts to the other teams. Also on the list was a high tech tea stall with computers in the front and Chaiwala at the back, But the chaiwala got sick and the idea was dropped, Well to be honest, we were lost in getting things done.
As expected, the response was huge and it was evident with how the front door and the reception area was decorated (messed up?!?). The Sharks won the Brain teaser 1 and many other events that secured our lead further. Tired and happy with the day’s proceeding’s the teams went back home only to wake up to a surprise email wanting them to compose jingles to promote their teams further.
Day 4 – Friday – 3rd July 2009
Brain teaser III was hard, I managed a few and only god knows if we were right as the results were never announced, so were the points for the craziest and the noisiest teams!! What do we do for the Jingle? Introducing Bala Arajunan, a tall slim guy wearing his best smile walked in with a guitar and the tune. Wow Bala, Nice Job! The next thing he did was to log on to the internet and login to you tube. Yes, Our tune was ‘INSPIRED’ from the you tube. It sounded funny, and the lyrics were modified to suit the competition.
Team One with the Jingle was the yellow tigers who sang a complete 4 minute song on a popular tamil song. With people making noise, The lyrics were hardly heard but for sure they were no where close to being called the Jingler’s 😛
Next on were the Black Panther’s, from who we saw a nice entertaining skit! That is all they did for the 80 percent of the act.. Where’s the jingle? How do I know? I wonder if there really was a jingle in there? Red Rhinos rapped some lyrics, and because it was short they came close very close to being called a Jingle act.
Our’s sounded more like the Jingle, at least in practice 😀 It was poorly executed as the chorus rarely got the tune. At least the lyrics were audible, but we only finished 2nd tied with the Black Panthers. The winners, a real surprise were the Yellow Tigers. It’s time We edit the content under the jingle section of the Wikipedia, Dancing and Singing for good 5 minutes is also a Jingle!
Brain Teaser II went to the Yellow Tigers this time as we finished tied (again) for the second spot with the black panthers. The lead was still there but thanks to such controversial decisions, it was shrinking.Unable to sustain the heat in the competition two teams, The Rhinos and The Panthers joined their long Hankie rope(well past the allocated 3 minutes) to be called winners. We were the longest ‘rope of hankies’ individually, yet we finished second. The points should have been shared, but the Judge decided to feed each team with 100 points for sportsman spirit?!? We ended the day with a lead of just 25 Points.
Day 5 – Saturday – 4th July 09
Day 4 was the start of one of the biggest downfalls, something similar to the way the Indian financial markets crashed as the finance minister started reading the budget. Teams had to parade an entry into the auditorium with the most colorful and innovative team the winner. U guessed it right, “We didn’t win” but we were not the last. The points were now tied, Three teams: Tigers, Panthers and Sharks all tied at 500. The events that followed were individuals, one or two people from each team were called and we lost, won, lost..
The highlight of the evening was the CHANDRAMUKHI task where in one lady from each team was called on stage to make up as CHANDRAMUKHI a.k.a Monjulika (Bhool Bhulaiya) and perform on stage. Image courtesy Google Images.
Smitha represented our team, and almost won it. The other girls, naturally horror looking won the task 😛 Not really, they were all beautiful who sportively toned down their looks with the make up and performed in front of a huge crowd. All in the name of entertainment.
We didn’t nail this one but we were inching closer to the finale. Two or three events later the scores were announced and we ‘The Sharks’ finished at number 3. Who won? It was super fun at the events, all that mattered was full participation and enthusiasm from the employees. In all regards the event was a grand success, and It wouldn’t be wrong in calling Photon the real winner.
Amidst all the entertainment were the employee awards, an accounts of Photon’s position in the current economy. the management announced the signing of a couple of multi-million dollar deals along with some very good news to the employees.. The cheer was back on! Next slide was displayed and the cheer got even louder! Only this time we were cheering together, not as a shark a tiger, a panther or a Rhino!
Wow, This day; Yes, the Saturday; The 4th of July 2009 will stay in the memory of all Photonites until the management surprises us with another event of bigger magnitude. I’d like to bring an end to this very long SHARK post by congratulating all teams and the management for a Job well Done! I’ll see you all in the next post! Have a great day 🙂
PS: Look into my public gallery on Picassa for newer albums of the event, Some will be updated as and when they are received from colleagues.
