Another Bad Experience With TataSky – No more cheers

This blog refers to the long suffering problems of the 2 million subscribers at TataSky, Following i paste a copy of the contents of the mail forwarded to the ccoo of tataSky. Read on to understand the problem better. Please note there has been no Reply to the same so far.


Hi,

This is in regards with the continuing problem of the channel offerings from TataSky and the rate at which they are offered.
People bought TataSky with trust in the name of the brand ‘TATA’ not knowing that they are going to face problems relating to it.

The Problem:

1. Channels that don’t interest the customer are added, the channel count
is increased only to lure the new customers.

On contacting the customer care relating to this, all we get as reply is that
the channel is available only on customer’s choice??.
Who chooses what the customer likes or dislikes? CC: Sir, we take surveys relating
to channels on regular intervals of time, Its TataSky who suggests us what to
show and what not to show.

We run a forum, where all the customers can login and discuss problems relating
to TataSky and this is the place where we even suggest a few people to choose
TataSky over the other competitors given the quality of video/ audio.

Not one member on this forum has said that they have received any such survey.
Where is the survey happening?
2. Channels that interest the customer are added to special add-on packs

Yes, this is happening. The customer care executive has another strange reply to that, ‘Sir, the channel distributors give it as a package and we give it to u’.

We as customers would not mind the packages if they were designed to suit us. A person who wishes to only see some South channels and some sports has to pay for the full pack. Even if he subscribes to ur pack, the charges are unacceptable.

When these channels are available for free as FTA, Why do u put them under special packs?

Why are these free to air channels not free??

TataSky receives a carriage fee from the channel boradcasters for putting them on the platform, Then why charge money from the subscribers?
U guys have not stayed away from sending us ad’s via alerts, all ur active services are crap and filled with ad’s, TataSky gets the money, The customer suffers.

3. Latest News: ESPN STAR, Star cricket moving to a spl pack called sports platinum pack, charged at Rs.75 a month.

When TataSky gets these channels at a much lower cost, why not pass the benifits on to the customers. TataSky decides whats good and whats bad for the customer, expecting the customer to take it just like in jail. It just does not make sense.

If u removing the channels and charging them in a separate pack why not reduce the base pack rates by the same amount,The base pack rates only go down for a bit, the add on pack rates are always high. Simply indicates Tata is money minded.

No reason is still given for having removed 13 zee channels, Rate still staying the same. If TataSky removes something, the money is saved,TataSky earns while we suffer.
4. Speculations, Speculations, Speculations.

Nothing in TataSky is clear or transparent, All the policies are hidden, The customer care does not know one bit about TataSky, We are more updated about the happenings in TataSky than the customer care itself, We run a forum that is a
better and valid source of information than TataSky customer care Center.

Given all the speculations that remain unclear, We the forum members have decided to start a hate thread against the service and have decided not to suggest anybody TataSky even when TataSky is offered for free.

We did suggest a few people, based on quality of service, It was bad but acceptable at that time, TataSKy claims its picture quality to be DVD, but has never understood the Term DVD quality picture and sound, We the customers accepted it.

Now the recent speculations on the channel packages make the same unacceptable, The quality is bad, u better take cable.

No particular reason is given for the removal of multiple camera angles, Highlights on demand for the IPL and the coming Australia west indies series, Only reply received, The content provider does not will to give, hiding the face that TataSky is not willing to pay for the same,

Revised Motto of TataSky:
We want more money, Not happy customers.
We want to lead the market, don’t want to stay there.

Does not look like u want to stay there, as the big competitors enter, Tata makes a move that only leads to more customer disconnecting. Nice strategy! earn as much as possible before the launch of new services, then we will offer everything for free. Nice work Guys!

Make all this a part of ur so much grouse website. It was never fun being on the website, There is nothing exciting.

Referral coupons are offered, But u need to buy through the customer care of TataSky at MRP, Does TataSky realize the discounts are available in the local markets. U have the STB in ur hand, and dont have to worry about getting it installed.

Buy it from the CC and have the tension of whether the product will be delivered on time, will it be in good working condition.
Let us all tell u, the programme is a failure. Get over it, Dont waste money on it. TataSky sure can make a fortune by it.

We were all happy customers, If u dont realize, each of us in the forum have 1000+ balance on our accounts only trusting that no matter how bad the service is, we still feel it is better than the other providers. Now is the case where we deny this.
It has been the worst.

We will all be leaving happily once our balance is over. U guys enjoy our money. Thanks for making us realize, If it is Tata, stay away from it, even if it is free.
We can assure u one more thing, None of the forum members, TataSky Users are going to buy ur Nano car, We realize it now.
It may be cheap, but we are sure Tata has already formulated a way to cheat the customers and earn money from the Cust-se-mar (die of pain, customer). Lemme suggest u one, Make the engine run on a apecial fuel that can only be bought from Tata, Make money. Thats what u have been doing so far with TataIndicom to begin with, Now its TataSky’s turn.

Get to know ur customers and value them.
We are not dumb and silent like ur Customer Care.

We feel cheated, TataSky has cheated 2 million people, and continues to do it over and over again, I have stopped trusting any product offering from Tata, Even the salt πŸ˜€

If i need all the channels that were previously available to me in the south jumbo pack priced at Rs.350 previously, i will have to pay a new subscription fee of Rs.395, An Increase of Rs.45, Unaccounted for.

New packs, I’ll need to buy:

South Jumbo: Rs.310 pm [Price reduced, Rs.40, from the original]
Sports Platinum pack: RS.30 pm [Espn, Star Sports, Star Cricket]
Sports Gold : Rs.30 pm [Currently, i have subscribed to it annually, when that expires i’ll need to pay extra]
Ten Sports Channel: Rs.15 pm [Only A-le-carte channel]
Lifestyle silver pack: Rs.30 pm [3 BBC channels, of which i only watch one]

A total of Rs.415 per month, an increase of Rs.75 pm. Ans now TataSky claims it has reduced prices, I feel cheated and so are the other 2 million subscribers. Hope TRAI takes a look into this and something happens to cheer the subscribers.

After All this, TataSky realises its mistake, The media comes into the picture, Questions being asked, No template replies can be given [Just like they did to customers]. Tatasky falls right on its back, nothing to decide, goes ahead and makes the channels available free of cost. Well Done ESS.

Inbetween all this ESS issues another ad, with DishTv, Offering its customers 500 Rs credit for every new connection. TataSky is doomed.

How bad can something be for TataSky, They have restored all channels not for the liking of the customers but to save their reputation. Just as this ad comes in paper, There is a news that Tata is the 6th most reputed company in the world! What big difference !!

After all this I’d say well done ESS!! What timing!!


Update [ 15 June 2008]:

A new scroller message is seen on ESPNSTAR Channels.

“ESPN STAR is now available free of cost to all the packs till 30th september 2008 or until our next update. ”

“Ten sports is a-le-carte channels and is available for freeΒ  till 30th June 2008, our next update will arrive soon.”

“All BBC channels are available free of cost to all the packs till 30th June 2008, Our Next update will arrive soon.”

The only reason i see offering the espn channels for free till the end of September is that, the UEFA cup, The Asia cup and the other major sporting events end by September. The long awaited champions league, champions trophy are to be played only in October , November. Tatasky is good at playing all sorts of mind games. They now need time to rethink their plans. I’m sure even the next update is going to be a money sucker.

No Reply to the mail yet. The case was closed, when asked about why, They said that was mistakenly done, my reply would arrive soon. Its been more than a month, This explains the kind of service they offer.

All that i have received is the same old replies, I call them templates that are sent out on specific questions. To questions that u cannot reply, do not reply is what the cc is told, Close the case and tell it was a mistake. πŸ˜€

TataSky under MRTPC lens :

DTH operator TataSky, which has removed some channels from its basic package has come under the scanner of fair trade regulator MRTPC for ‘monopolisation of price and imposing unjustified cost on the subscribers’ after it issued notice to the company.

In its petition, Voluntary Organization in Interest of Consumer Education (VOICE) alleged that the Direct-to-Home (DTH) operator by misleading its consumers arbitrarily increased the price.

“Action of TataSky in blacking out the said channels and removing it from the base pack enjoyed by the subscribers was clearly a monopolization of price and imposing unjustified cost on the subscribers and to deprive the viewer ship of the said channels unless the subscribers pay more,” said VOICE.

DTH operators to submit quarterly performance report: Trai

NEW DELHI: Trai (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has ordered the three existing direct-to-home (DTH) operators – Tata Sky, Dish TV and Sun Direct TV – to submit quarterly performance monitoring reports (PMRs) within 21 days from the end of each quarter to the regulator and the ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The information will include carriage fee charged from the broadcaster, number of registered and active subscribers on the last date of the quarter, details of subscription and installation plans, redressal of grievances of DTH subscribers by call center, and name and type of the channels dropped during the quarter along with the reasons for it.

TataSky agrees to offer ESPN-Star channels on basic package. (Read the full story here!)

Direct-to-Home operator TataSky has submitted before broadcast tribunal TDSAT that it will continue to provide free signals of ESPN-Star group channels on its basic package till November this year.

“Counsel for the respondent (TataSky) clarifies that the respondent would continue to offer three free channels β€” ESPN, Star Sports and Star Cricket β€” to those subscribers who enrolled six months prior to June 1, 2008 up to November 30, 2008,” said the TDSAT bench admitting TataSky’s submission.

The company, which is facing cases filed by consumer organizations before fair trade regulator MRTPC and broadcast regulator TDSAT over removal of channels, submitted before the tribunal’s bench headed by Justice Arun Kumar that TRAI guidelines permitted it to reduce the number of channels on its platform.

Update [29 September 2008]

TataSky is changing damaged Set Top Box, which have expired warranty for Rs.350!Β  As per some Newbie on the forum.

This comes as some refreshing news to all existing customers, as otherwise.. The customers would have ended up paying the full amount for a new set top box. No source to this piece of information. Will confirm soon with TataSky!

Today on, The TataSky packages change.. This means that my subscription cost goes very high.. Actually above Rs.440/- How?? Take a look..

A-le-Carte – Ten Sports – Rs.15

At this cost i could i have got 2 months of cable having channels of my choice.. TataSky misery continues.. Is TataSky doing anything about it..
Ps: If i knew how to calculate inflation, TataSky’s Inflation rate could have reached 3 figures now.

    Bought tata sky in SEPTEMBER 2007 with the scheme of 6months free for Rs.4000. Thinking that all the channel will be available. After that Tatasky started reducing the no. of channels by putting tem into packages like lifestyle silver life style gold , sports package etc.for this you have to pay more (appx. 40-50rs per package)This is making fool out of people. Buy reducing their price to Rs.260/ they have infact increased the price.For example.. If I opt for Super saver pack it would cost me Rs.260. without the channels which are in lifestyle silver and life style gold and sport gold pack. Now if I want to see all the channel I have to pay Rs.30 per package that make another 90Rs for all 3 packages so the total comes to RS260+90=350per month.And all the packages have some important channels like lifestyle silver has BBC in it. And what about the people who bought tatasky under diff. scheme. Like I bought it under 6months free. Tata sky is chor The suck. I am getting it removed Secondly there is a lag in tatasky. And also some stupid numbers keep on apprearing right in the middle of the screen.

    U and me are not the only people suffering, Over 2 million subscribers have been cheated.
    I have over 1500 in balance, which i think i have to donate it to them for no reason. The marketing person i spoke to when the new package rates were confirmed told me that, there are not many people who watch sports channels when there is no cricket, I asked what percentage, He says not more than 20%, Which means to satisfy those 20% people they can sacrifice the needs of the 80% customers.

    When asked why the base pack rates were not reduced to the price the new packs costed, they go on to tell that they are giving the packs at the rate they are receiving it from the broadcasters, I did quote saying that ESPN Star offers their pack at not more than 30Rs, he has no reply to it.

    All these apeculation has made me realize one thing, Never buy anything from Tata, Be it even salt. The only reason i see the changes in packaging is that, Before Reliance launches its service which is one or 2 months from now, they want to earn as much as possible. I’m sure as Reliance launches, the packages would have vanished, the price being brought down.

    But I have decided, as soon as my balance on the account is over, i’ll just call my cable guy and say Tata to Tata. I can bang my head for having the cable [ Atleast i can blame him in person] But in Tata i feel u r talking to bots.

    Hi,

    I read the blog and understand that like me there are more people in the Tatasky racket, but who will tie the knot to the tatasky cat. Two days back I understand that the Sports Gold pack of Tatasky which I have subscribed for a year is no more valid. Tatasky gives some simple reason which I am not ready to accept.

    MY Thoughts to Tatasky…

    Why change policy when some users have already subscribed. Give Customer Delight First priority.

    I suggest not to investigate only on ways to increase the Income…But also consider Customer Preference.

    Thanks for stopping by, Just like u everyone who has a TataSky connection feels cheated. I have tried my bit, by writing to various public legistations, TRAI, News Channels, News papers, Many public forums where People visit to know about the product to warn the consumers.

    I have even sent mails/ letters to CCOO, people at Tatasky asking for the reason behind such decisions. After having received replies that are negative, I have decided to let go off my connection as soon as the balance is over. DTH is now become a costly affair, never expected such humiliation after buying a Tata Product.

    I have been a tatasky customer for more than one year. I am closely monitoring tatasky’s business. Always, there are possiblities for increasing costs (like add-on, etc). But, there is absolutely no benefits for existing customer. Recently, they have removed ESPN channels and Ten Sports from my South Jumpo package which costs 40 and 15 Rupees respectively.
    But, they have only reduced 40 rupees from my package cost (350 to 310 Rs). I don’t know where that 15 Rupees will be accomadated. Like me, there might be lakhs of people would have been affected and Tatasky has easy of making money.

    Let us work together to find a solution quickly. We (Easwar and myself) are thinking seriously. Join with us and give your patronage.

    I have tried every single link that could help me take a step against TataSky, I have not left a single step unturned. I’m one of the most unhappy customer.

    I even went to the extent of sending them a balti using ibibo.co baltigiri cause, With the support of a few of the India Broadband forum members.

    I seriously suggest every TataSky subscriber to join the broadbandforum @ http://broadbandforum.in/tata-sky-dth/, It is the place where we discuss TataSky and we decide whether a protest is needed.

    The members on this forum came together and flooded the telephone lines, mailboxes of TataSky for Star Cricket, Eventually TataSky had to bring in Star cricket, and it was one battle won against TataSky.

    Lately, None of our calls were given positive replies, nor the mails were looked into. Tried everything possible.

    If u guys have anything that u can do, Members at the forum will be gladly able to hand u support!

    Keep going guys, I’m with u!

    Thanks for your support.

    I also feel very bad about Tatasky is, we need to wait more than 15 minutes for contacting customer care. It will cost around 40 Rupees. Moreover, there we had to listen their advetisement. It is the stupid area for advertising. They should realize that. We will come back with you after collecting all of our friends ideas here.

    Hi all..Tata Sky indeed has created hell for people who enjoy sports.My uncle who loves these sports channels is very unhappy since he is unable to unsubscribe to the packages. I checked their website. No help on that. Tried calling them. No use. Can someone help me out?

    My uncle is 72 yrs old…Would be glad if someone can help me out.

    I have been one of the unlucky Tatasky customers who subscribed for the Jumbo Super “Suckers'” Package and to add to my woes I bought 2 STBs, so that while I watch Star Cricket other family members can watch their favourite channel. And the TATAS served me right for trusting their name.

    To add insult to the injury their Chief Marketing Officer has the audacity to send an email to my inbox asking for referrals. I salute this fellow’s ingenuity.

    Hope ur problem has been resolved, if not, use the web section of the TataSky portal, adding packages is a single step process. U need to register and then login to do so.

    Just like u, I’m sure the 2 Million customers are suffering and are finding a place to talk about it. One thing i have learnt from the whole tatasky experience is to evaluate the product completely before buying it. U can so so by browsing the internet, find forums where the product has been discussed, Review it completely, Analyse the pro’s and cons, Finally decide to buy a product after giving it a lot of thought.

    For people who might be wondering Nano is for them, Think again, Tata likes to suck money from the customer’s, Need evidence, ask the subscribers of TataIndicom and TataSky. They will sell the car for cheap, but will have a monopoly on selling the spare parts, What will we do then?? We will have to buy!! Thats Tata in short for u!!

    All the noises and protests by the customers seem to have forced Tatasky into submission and they have brought back all the channels. Hope it is not just a temporary step taken to appease the customers for now.

    Hi,

    Fed up with the TATA sky services. Shifted from cable to this one, for no reason 2 months ago. Bought south Jumbo pack to get all the channels (And extra box and secondary subscripton). But slowly channels of interest have been moved to add on package. My wife interested in bindaas zoom, kid interested in ceebees and my interest in bbc news, and espn, star sports. Of course we need regular interesting channels. Now the euro 2008 being started, and suddenly they decided what to change on what I have subscribed. Had I sticked to cable I could have watched the euro 08. Waiting for my balance to end, unfortunately it ends after 6-7 months!

    Other problems:
    Have two boxes, one box switched on causes the electric shocks at the other box.

    Ideally, DTH service providers should be charging for the smart card (which should decide the subscription). Here, the box and the smart card is tied. I am willing to buy three-four boxes and keep them in each room and buy one/two cards and watch the channels which ever room I want to.

    Other reason, the users should be allowed to buy their boxes. One could go and buy a box with 200 GB hard disk and record the program for later viewing. Or go for a box with HDMI out. or whatever different boxes could allow!

    The same is the case for me, thats when i decided to take an initiative on the same, i decided to make people aware of the problems associated with tataSky before they could actually make a decision. Being on the forum was not going to help, thats where my blog came in. Every single subscriber is a fool is what Tata Feels. I seriously suggest u to be a member of the forum to discuss more about TataSky and to be a part of all the e-campaigns against them.

    During the recent case of TataSky claiming the reduction in prices, where they had actually increased the prices to more than 25% for the customers who chose to watch all the channels, i decided to write some letters to the editorials of various media houses. ESPN stepped in and played its part, It was for their own interest as most of the subscribers chose espn only during cricket and espn thereby losing substantial revenue. It issued a public notice, and viola, Tata is back in discussion. Thats when the whole media story began to happen, and Tata for once had to give concrete answers to all the media questions. Done and deal! All the channels are back to their base packs and an update on the new packs to arrive soon. Good work by ESS, I’d rather pay Rs.40 to ESS than to TataSky.

    I’ve been reading what all u guys have written and can only add that this is a big con game by the DTH operators. Importantly all you guys have to understand that these people are in this business basically to make money, and pots of money. They know that this is a hen they can kill many times over for the golden eggs. We Indians are fools to get sucked into this BIG CON GAME. The TRAI is also hand in glove with these people. The money involved is big,so people can get killed for coming in the way of these pack of Crooks masquerading in the name of Businessmen,or they could also be on their payroll. Else this would not have gone unchecked for such a long time.

    why dont you take up the issue of being made to pay to watch ads on Pay channels.

    the logic given by pay channels that they subsidize the subscription and so show ads is flawed and cunning.

    If you compare it with any other country, say, singapore, malasya, or even sri lanka, the subscription is not very much higher and the movie channels are add free and break free.

    For example .

    HBO and atar movies charge about Rs45/- sri lankan rupees ( this is Ad free HBO and star movies and NOT ad filled INDIAN feed) .

    they have barely 200,000 subs in SL.

    but HBO charges INR 15 al la carte and has 70 million viewers in india.

    so the sub revenue from india is several times more than SL so, why the ads ?

    why do we pay to watch ads like fools.

    For a long time I was searching for a forum to post my complaint against Tatasky. I pay used to Rs.300/- per month to get access to all channels. Slowly new channels were launched, like 9X, bindass, NDTV Imagine etc which became part of Lifestyle Gold after free broadcast for 2 months or so…whereas my cable operator provides them free, as I learnt that these are free to air channels. He charges us for other paid channels which we have subscribed via the settop box taken from him.

    Rs.300/- is quite a substantial amount for a middle class family like mine that too for a single connection. Suddenly much to our dismay Tatasky took away certain channels in the name of cost reduction which of course they were forced to restore after much pressure…

    It is tatasky who is designing the package of bouquet of channels to us, why can’t we do that as we do for cable TV operators? I have no problems with the quality of transmission but Cable Operators have also digitalised their transmission, here we can design our own package, free to air channels are not charged for in the name of Lifestyle Gold etc? I would like to give up my connection and get a reimbursement for the amount I paid towards settop box, antenna etc., so that I can take a connection from the cable operator who is offering more value for money….

    Thanks for stopping by. TataSky has signed agreements from the customers, Its a fine print and there can be no way to sue this guys.

    If and only if they break some contract terms, it will be possible to drag them to court. It is us as customers need to voice a common opinion to the company and make it public so that these guys dont have any place to hide their faces.

    If u had been going through the news papers over the past few weeks, u would have seen how espn has managed to create some kind of awareness amongst the people by issuing ‘public notices’
    Tata is now offering the espn pack for free till sep 30th, as most of the big sporting events end in september, Champions league also begins only in november.

    Nothing can be done with these private operators unless the regulatory steps in, The regulatory needs to be concerned about the customer’s which can only be achieved if all 2 million subscribers complain.

    I have been thinking of buying a DTH for long being fed up of my local cablewallah. However whenever I looked at the packages and offers of both Dish and TataSky I realized they were not value for money and I could do without DTH for the time being. With the launch of Big Tv DTH I once again decided to check what was on offer. And I am really surprised at what I found today on this forum. Having read all the posts here I can conclude that DTH is injurious to your mental fiscal and physical health just like cancer. I always had an inkling of doubt whenever I checked their websites to read about their packages, their mode of payment (tataSky’s recharge coupons) and installation charges and terms and conditions. I always used to postpone my buying decision due to this. It seems I was always right. My sympathies to those mass of people who bought, fought and lost against the DTHwallahs. I for one have decided to wait it out till something substantially good comes along, maybe IPTV for one.

    The real truth is something that is totally different. I’m glad u did a bit of research before u made the purchasing decision. I would never recommend a new product unless it is a offering from the government, With government u can be sure that they will look after the customers.

    star plus, star gold, sony, set max, z news, star news, channel V, MTV are availble for 200 rs per month only except sports channels

    well i dont like sports so why should i require ESPN etc

    Well if that is the case, u can always go ahead and buy tatasky..
    U must also be aware that they have some bad customer service.. (Please read the latest blog post on my blog).. and they change package cost at their will.. which is completely not acceptable..

    Please take a look at this post too.. there are links to other post in this post itself..u must then get a good idea of what to expect..

    If u r planning to move to DTH.. i suggest u to take a look at other options as well.. BIGTV has great entry level offers compared to Tata… U might not feel the pinch now, after one year with the service Tata starts showing it’s real avatars..

    Reading your posts proved to be such an enlightening experience for me. I have been a Tatasky subscriber right from the second-half of the year 2006(I must be one of the first few ‘chosen unlucky’ ones to subscribe to their service). I have no complaints about their picture quality whatsoever(expect when its’ raining). Having paid nearly Rs.4,000 then and then initially monthly charges of about Rs.300, I received my first blow when then discontinued the three zee channels I loved watching the most-zee classic, zee action and zee premier-this happened in the middle of the year 2007.

    I thought, fine, for now perhaps they are not offering these, later-on, they would be forced to offer due to competition-but no, that was not to happen. Everytime I call their customer service and ask them about that, the only answer they have is-‘we would let you know’.
    Right now, I have the supersaver pack, which claims to offer me 114 channels. Well, I have never made an attempt to count the number of channels but I watch hardly 10-15 of them. The rest of my favorite channels-the sports ones, the life-style ones require special payment. And I can’t understand what ‘you pay only for what you watch’ facility they speak about-I have to pay for all the channels to get just 2-3 and what’s worse-I can’t change my package for at least a month.

    They have now introduce tata sky + and claim to provide 50% discount on it(in actuality, the discount works to just the installation charges, otherwise you have to pay and buy package for the entire year-another way of bonding us). I am seriously contemplating getting the service disconnected.

    By the way, would I get any sort of refund if I choose to return my set-top box now?

    Forgot to mention…..their manual claimed they would be starting a ‘musicchoice’ service soon under which we would get hitherto unheard radio stations but all they provided was a few AIR and other stations……I am still waiting for that service to be launched πŸ˜€

    1. use ccoo@tatasky.com for sending emails for suggestions/complaints.. They reply to ur emails, if not they give u a call.. If everyone writes into them we can hope for a change!

    2. Somebody will have to file a case against them for misleading.. As u sadi the manual claimed that there will be a music service, signs of which continue to be absent.. If we have a strong case also allowing other customers to be a part of it we can get things like we want.. But what the hell.. this s India’s corporate governance.. When Trai continues to ignore all the TataSky and DTH beings, we can only hope for a change πŸ™‚

    You and some of your friends (read Manu Sharma in another big blog) seems to be having personal issues with DTH services. However hard you try, the customer base for DTH services will increase and your blogs will remain as just bunch of useless texts.

    I am a tata sky customer for almost 1.5 years and I am happy that I switched over from cable operators. I dont need to provide explaination about whats good about tata sky/DTH services. We seem to be cribbing about things we are not getting but we dont appreciate the improvements we are getting.

    Please stop misleading people.

    All i have tried to do is to warn customers (and not influence them) falling prey into the hands of any DTH operator.. DTH in India is a costly affair and you will see more such blogs being written unless the ‘value for money’ factor makes comes in terms with the people..

    You have your own preference, and I;m glad i have fund 1 out of 10 million customers who like this service and can’t justify it.. Please do..

    If you are warning people then you should provide a critical and unbiased view of the entire service provided by Tata sky. None of the comments refer to the benefits one get by subscribing to the DTH services. Its all bad comments. It should be then upto an individual reader to decide whats good and whats bad. If one does a critical evaluation, he/she may be ready to pay extra what Tata sky is charging. You have not listed:

    1. The picture quality is excellent. No cable operator can match that quality
    2. The guide function is excellent. I can know whats on for next 24 hours on any channel. I can set reminders.
    3. In some channels, I have language options, extremely useful for kids channels
    4. The channel numbers remain fix unlike cable operators.
    5. Cable operators also drop channels at their whims. Here atleast I know what I am going to get once I pay the amount.
    6. Payment options are very easy.
    7. My TV services are not affected in case of power cut, unlike cable operators.
    8. May not be efficient, but you have a customer care number where you can call for any issues. I have never faced any issues with call center and the staff has been helpful in all respects.
    9. If you pay upfront, then you have price protection for the entire year.
    10. Have options for setting favourites, again useful feature.

    So if you think you are doing a job of awareness, please be unbiased. Otherwise first time reader will undoubtedly feel that tata sky is crap. If you see globally the DTH services work in the same fashion, so in India its no different story.

    I’m glad you have put up what TataSky mostly publicizes..

    I agree with everything you have got to say.. Except for a few points that i’d like to add..

    1. The customer service is customer friendly.. but tataSky never publicized their toll free number.. The brochures still carry a 1860 number..
    2. Ever tried emailing problems? The response makes you feel like you are talking to a bot.
    3. The price protection is acceptable, but the prices are too high.. All in the name of picture quality..
    4. If you are in CAS region you will get all the facilities Tata Sky offers at a cheaper price.. and at a decent picture quality.
    5. TV services may not be affected, but Tata Sky fails in rains.. Think what happens with people in the coastal regions of Orrisa and Kerala?
    5. Setting Favorites is again a common feature on most other DTH services.. No exclusive content available too..

    I will re-assert the problems

    1. Price, I pay about 500 Rs. for the channels I want to watch. Pay upfront and you may pay 50 less.
    2. Packages are the worst, They suit TataSky more than the customers. customer feedback on the same is neglected.
    3. Exclusive content is missing. The need for active mall and Matrimony is needless. Active sports is simply taken off the bouquet.
    4. Old customers are neglected, offers are only for the entry level customers.

    These comments are completely personal, I do not intend to influence or change the decision of any TataSky seeker or beholder.. It’s a personal choice and a personal blog with nobody paying me to write anything against anybody.

    I disagree to some points

    1. How many customers want to watch ALL the channels? I am not interested in south channels if I have nothing do with it.
    2. The current tata sky packages have
    – Super hits package – 60 channels – 100 Rs
    – Super Value Package – 100 Channels – 200 Rs
    – Super Save Package – 125 channels – 275

    and various add on packages.

    So if I am interested in the most common channels, like sony, star plus, etc. and sports I will go for 60 channels package and then a sports channel. Its still cheaper than cable.

    Have you seen tatasky.com for recent packages. Please see.

    3. You are saying about decent quality on CAS but here were are talking about excellent quality. So the price u are paying for the best quality.
    4. I have never required to drop an email as all the problems (very few though) have been solved on the phone.
    5. I stay in coaster area and agree that during rains the service is distrupted but not more than 10 mins. When I had cable, I had nightmares in the rains due to physical cabling problems.
    6. I am an old customer – but I regularly get updates either on SMS, calls or brouchers about the new packages. Recently I got a call for annual package which saved me 2 months sub free. So dont agree that old customers are neglected.
    7. Exclusive contents – Tata sky offers tata sky +. You have to pay the price but who will not charge for premium services.
    8. ACTIVE channels – If you are not interested that doesnt mean no one else will be.

    I have nothing against you, your comments or Tatasky..
    All I’m trying to do is present my view points of a service i have been using for more than 2 years now..

    Packages – I really don’t know if they are customer friendly, imagine a south Indian viewer who is forced into buying a basic pack that has unwanted Hindi channels according to him.. For me the way LS gold is packaged is hard to digest.. Anyways, No more comments on the packages..

    I have seen the tataSky channel packages, I have never been a big fan of them.. Right now, IPL on Sony Max.. Which means everybody is forced to upgrade to a higher pack.. Why not remove this channel as a-le-carte temporarily?

    The cost – Definitely high when compared to CAS. The option however is open to all customers to choose between a high cost for good picture quality or low cost CAS with decent picture quality and service

    Last night it rained in Chennai, this is where i live and lost signal for over 30 mins.. Did some manual tuning, and finally found a signal on IN4A-15 instead of In4A-14 (The regular).. Think about how long the signal would have been missing when people don’t know how to tune…

    Yes, you are saved from price changes when u subscribe annually, u also get a 2 month bonus.. But finally when u evaluate what you pay for, it’s still pretty high(It’s what i think, 400 a month may not be costly for others)..

    Active Services are a big bore and the TP space can well be utilized for new channels..
    Last night i saw a rupa macroman ad along with the Press (red) button on star news blocking enough space on the tv..

    I’m not influencing anybody.. They are my thoughts and I think TataSky is no value for the money!

    Set Max is in the base package i.e. Rs 100/-. Go ahead and watch IPL only for Rs 100.

    I dont understand what signalling issue u are tying to highlight. Its not for us to worry about techical stuffs. Just call an engineer.

    If I dont want my tata sky service for long period, just dont pay and after few months if you want to join back no joining fees. How many CAS/cable operators will agree to this? It will be upto an individual.

    Tata sky offers multiroom, you can watch different channel on each set. Does a cable operator offer that? Dont think so.

    If I change my address, I dont have to worry about losing services and whether I will have cable operator/CAS in my new area. I carry my tata sky account with me.

    If I have access internet, I can do self-service on the portal. CAS/Cable doesnt offer anything.

    The future is DTH and if we say the techology that western countries have evolved, we are far behind. We need to get there soon.

    Secondly, What you say is absolutely right and i tend to agree with you on the points you have made regarding the other benefits of owning a DTH service..

    DTH is the way forward, definitely. But for now, It’s just too costly for any middle class family..

    About the problem regarding signal problem.. I figured the problem out myself and fixed it.. A call for an engineer would have costed me 350 bucks..

    Its nice to see an individual investing so much time and effort into trying to evaluate a product which is offered for mass consumption.
    I have recently bought a bigger LCD TV and still use my cable operator for tv subscription. I searched online to see whether there are any options out there to get a better service in terms of reception quality and channel groups.
    Since being in Mumbai, there are 3 choices: tata sky, dish tv and big tv.
    I have read thru your blog about tata sky and do think that they are bilking the customers. The packages they offer have a substantial number of unwanted channels and the most watched channels are grouped into different packages which makes a decent subscription unnecessarily expensive.

    I was wondering if whether you had any thoughts on the quality of the other 2 options: dish tv and big tv.

    The quality of dish tv on the ground is not known to me, hence I am a not eager to buy it.
    As for Big tv (from reliance group), it has a broken website and I have yet to meet anyone who subscribes to it.

    I have used TataSky and hence can only comment on a detailed service problems related with it.

    I have been a member of online discussion forums and noted that DishTv isn’t better either, infact it is said to be poor than TataSky, atleast in customer service front. Yes, they offer a better package and Decent quality.. But I doubt if they have their active services working. I mean Active sports is inactive in all DTH.
    But then you can always cheat Dish TV, People who install the dish are people from the local area and I wonder if they are authorized personnel because When I bought my DTH connection, the guy in the shop suggested me taking another connection for a friend or neighbour under the same name. He would make it multi-room subscription and then we could share the charges. That was 2 years back!

    BIGTV has only recently launched in the market, They had a decent opening but have failed to get more customers. I find their packages very confusing. Airtel DTH is another option, but it’s good only till the free period, Otherwise i guess it’s costlier than TataSky. Interested in Airtel: check out this offer:

    DTH is costly no matter which company owns it. They give decent quality and good service. Imagine having o phone the cable operator for removal or addition of channel. In DTH it’s instant. If you dont mind paying the high subscription charge, go Tatasky or DishTV. Make sure you check the quality on the bigger LCD, it sometimes pixelates.

    I am leaning towards going with Dish TV, since it has a better package that suit my needs and also that my father has an opinion that dish tv is better. Not sure where he picked that up, but he said lot of his friends had good experiences with dish tv.
    Yeah, the pixelation thing, I need to check that out too.
    Since I bought the LCD TV at the store, tata sky looked ok on it, not sure how it would perform with Dish TV.

    Tata Sky service is absolutely down the drain. At the height of world cup, on the day of quarters my digicomp stopped functioning. It has been 7 days and till now they have not even visited my place. My subscriber ID is 1012439673.

    Tata Sky need to review technical support to customers. It is arbitrary and illegal to charge for rectification of faults such as due to rain, etc. TATA SKY need to follow Airtel / MTNL / BSNL model : ” no charge for visits and rectification of faults”.

    Reserve right to initiate further appropriate action as deemed fit. Goven your self accordingly.

    I have using tata sky in south india for long time nearly 1-1/2 year since cable channel don’t provide much hindi channels. But back(i m now in north) in delhi i think cable is best. My STB stopped working and when i raised multiple time by calling their help line no. which is a STD no from delhi one fine day got a call from 1 lady saying since basic STB is not available i will have to wait for it. I asked hw much it cost she told 350/. not sure if she was bliuffing or what? 5 days gone and no response. I can see tata sky daily deducting 20/ from my account. It’s a cheat. I told them to stop service but no response from them. Tata sky is a cheat!!!

    Tata sky is a service that is far better than the service from the local cable operator. Yes, their prices are higher and problems pointed out by me are real, but they are a private company and are scared about brand damage. If you convince them enough that you can cause a threat to their brand, they will do everything the way you like. Try talking to them in a soft tone and see if they can refund the money! Then Disconnect tatasky! πŸ˜€

    I have also been made a sucker by Tatasky. I have taken the Tatasky connection about 45 days ago. I have not been able to view the TV for peacefully since then. The digicom supplied is defective. It has been replaced with another junk piece which did not work for a day. The technician says that it is the policy of Tatasky to supply defective pieces. We were also fooled by the brand name. Sorry to say that we are senior citizens who are being taken for a sad ride by TATASKY. Jeeven haram kar diya not jingalala by Tatasky.

    TATASKY sucks! I am a Malayalee and had subscribed to this service as they were providing seven Malayalam channels. Now, arbitrarily, they have removed three channels with no satisfactory explanation – the helpline is unaware of what is happening !

    Tata Sky’s warranty terms are suspect. The terms and conditions on their website is different from the varying versions presented by call center agents. On one instance I have been told that it is seven days from installation and on another instance it is 3 months. The web site mentions 12 months ! Recently the adapter of my 3rd connection went bad after a month of installation. They charged me Rs 125/- for replacement. After protest the charges were reversed. They charged me again for Rs.125/- after a month for the same. After prolonged protest over warranty interpretations, the charges were reversed again yesterday. Since yesterday midnight, no signal is available on all three stbs. I have booked a complain today morning. Let us see what the cause might be. Any way they will recover their Rs.125/- for this visit. Is it possible that TS can intentionally disconnect signal reception as and when they wish ? where to take up the matter for redress in the event it is found to be arm twisting tactics ?

    Tatasky technician visited and found that the dish orientation had shifted. He realigned the same and signals were back.

    I read this from one user. My question is, Why should I threaten or try talking to them in soft tone, when I am demanding usual services and nothing unusual. Why should all these tactics be used? I expect their services when i am paying for it. Do they have to talk to me in soft tone or threaten me after providing me their service? is it usual to expect that?

    Hi kunal, I m currently working for tata sky as cce and taking call and resolving issues of customer on call, and have almost each and every info(internal as well) about the process how it works, read all above and agree to the issues as many customer are facing, and I can’t help anyone about it on this blog post would request u to contact me and I assure u that I can help u know and understand the workings if the company and resolve many of your issues

    tata sky is cheating with peoples.its not providing free to air channels for free.its taking charge for every channels.and if asking for surrender its not giving money back.

    We returned home on the 24th of June 2016 after a long holiday and recharged the account.

    Got an error Set top box not receiving singnal. Called up tata Sky. registered a complaint

    only after the 3rd attempts (and 50 bucks of talktime lost).

    Great. Technician Comes on 29th June 2016. Changes 2 connectors, asks for 90 rupees. Says if

    I put this bill on your account tata sky will charge 130 Rs so better give me 90 Rs instead.

    Later get a call from tata sky inform them about this and they tell me that they do not

    charge anything for the connectors.

    Now the problem starts again later the same day. Call up tata sky next day (30th June 2016)

    register a complaint technician comes changes some part 100 Rs charged in the account. Fine

    so far.

    Then to my shock find out that they have charged 200 on the 29th and another 200 on the

    30th.

    Find out that once charged the service is available for a month. Above that it was the same

    issue that was un resolved.

    Whent through some 10 calls with tata Sky and lost some 100Rs of talk time insisting that I

    was falsly charged. But they kept making up stories.
    One store was: Sir the first 200 Rs was for buying warrnty and the next 200 was the visiting

    charge. So you will not be refunded.

    One of the last calls I got, A person said that we were falsly charged and the 200 Rs will

    be refunded. But again the next day a mother less fatherless lady called telling the same

    storey and that there would be no refund as it was correctly charged.

    I must agree that TataSky is still one of the better service providers.
