Videocon D2H – Direct to Home or Direct to Hell?

Videocon DTHI know it comes late, I promised to start with this much earlier than I’m doing now. I’ve been busy replying to comments on my Indian Idol posts, a lot of the viewers seem to be affected by Sashi’s elimination and hence they are in the lookout to discuss on whatever they can find.

Now that I finally have a DTH review to write, let’s get started? Yes, so like some of you already know I own a TataSky connection for the last four years, and that the service is not what I have been particularly happy about. Why start a series of DTH reviews on a bad note? So I’ve decided to review Videocon’s new DTH Service.. and this is how I’m going to do it..

First, I sent out an email to their sales division showing interest in their product. Depending on the time they took to reply, I’d know how their customer service email cell worked. They did reply! That’s a start, but they took 2 days to reply. Of course, that’s bad considering this was a sales call. What I personally didn’t like was them sending me an “Auto response” looks alike email and this is what I mean (Click to enlarge)

Videocon DTH email

Wonderful eh? They even went on to attach the packages and offers into the email. I was star struck! I guess the customer service isn’t trained to read words like “call me”, or “reply with a call” because they are only trained to send an email response and never follow up! If a sales call receives this kind of a response, I wonder how they treat customer service calls.

Second, a look at videocon D2H website. Abhishek Bachan is all over the place giving you 25 reasons to buy, not one convincing enough to make the purchase. The site minus Abhishek Bachan looks pretty cool, and every section in itself is very interesting, like the packages section? Simple and straight forward, We have 6 packages and this is the price we want to offer you, inclusive of all taxes! Enough channels to keep the family entertained.

Promotional offers are interesting and more than tempt you to buy, but are they worth the purchase. Four different types of STB, my god! Plenty in each category. So let’s just redirect you to this page. Abhishek is everywhere, How I wish I can just paint him black and put him in the background. Hate stars as brand ambassadors because they rarely know about how this technology works! Dude, can you leave me alone here please?

He’ll not go, but I have to finish the review. So they have 4 broad categories, No.1 Satellite LCD, what they call the pioneer of DTH technology, a DTH STB fitted into the LCD. You don’t need a dish, the TV is your receiver! Wow, but go visit the nearest dealer and ask for a demo. The clarity is mediocre on the LCD and the time to switch between channels is almost 5 seconds. Plus, if there is a problem (after 1 year in warranty) you could be put through videocon’s already bad customer service.

Second of their categories is the Satellite TV, this is their latest slim TV series fitted with Videocon D2H STB. Again, same problem, the channel switch time is so much that you’d feel that the STB is stuck! To a lot of people wondering that the TV cannot be used if you don’t want their connection, videocon says otherwise, it’s their way of boosting offline TV sales!

Third, the satellite DVD, This looks interesting, a DVD player cum STB. It however requires standard installation of a dish and the pain of wires lying around the house. Something that I guess most of us can live with. Again, the quality is only mediocre.

Wonder if it is so because they demo it _only_ on a LCD. Anyways, this box comes fitted with a DVD player and has an USB port to play avi format movies. It’s nice, but then you might only want to buy the regular box, just like every other DTH provider.

Oh and the universal remote, It’s nice. You can now use one remote for your TV and DTH only it’s 300 bucks costlier. Enough? Then lets talk customer service..

Tatasky has a toll free number and will not promote it, but Videocon not only promotes it but has 3 numbers! Why? They want the customers to be able to connect to every customer within the shortest time possible. They greet you with some foreign accent, but you can live with that because connecting to a customer service agent was just in two menus. Kudos for that!

What followed was a 10 minute conversation with several customer service agents. Several? Yes, I called over 10 times and spoke to 10 different people. What I found was the same response; everyone was reading a transcript I guess. Though the voice was human it felt like talking to a computer. They have been told to tell you everything “good” about the product before you say bye.

It’s not bad as it sounds though. If you are able to handle the call well you will get the details. Just stop them, shout if they don’t! At the end of it all, it was quite resourceful, the customer service knows about their product, if they don’t they ask you to visit the website. But none were able to convince me to purchase a connection.

Pros: Wide range of Satellite boxes, Simple packages, Competitive pricing, 3 toll free numbers
Cons: Abhishek Bachan, mediocre picture quality, poor customer service on email

Suggestion to Videocon: I hate you guys for Planet M, but you have a good looking D2h. The demo’s are the first thing that the customer looks at before making a decision to even inquire about the product, if that is bad, forget it! I’ve looked at 3 demos of Videocon D2H and all of them have been the satellite LCD. It’s what major Indian households have. While Satellite LCD is a step into the future, you are still serving the majority audience that owns a 21″ CRT. It’s okay to have the regular STB, and a 21″ CRT for demo. The clarity would seem a lot better on that and you might just increase the sales.

Channel packaging is great and the price very competitive, something that everyone wants in an inflated market. I would have bought the service by now, at least on trial if I saw a good demo with good picture clarity and a better channel response time. Please reach customers through phone more than emails, at least if they say so in their email. The last thing I as a customer want to see an ‘Auto Response’ type looking email.

Final Verdict: Buy it only after you see it! Videocon D2H rates between Direct to home and Direct to hell

Until next time.

A DTH is considered best when it gives value for money, has good customer service. I haven’t tried any other customer service, so cannot say as to why Videocon surpasses every other DTH service!

@kunal u said a dth service is good if it gives you value for money..and has good customer service…then why include the brand ambassador in the review????…what has abhishek bachchan gotta do with their service..he’s just their face and dats it..whether its good or bad..its their business lookout..but I am saying if you are reviewing a product, including abhishek bachchan in the cons..is simply like annoucing to the world that you hate him…if the service is good, ppl will buy it…

    Hi Navin,

Thanks for the comment. Sort of agree to what you say. Yes, I hate Abhishek Bachan because he only cares about the money and doesn’t care about what he’s selling. It’s like “I will do anything for money”. One part of the blog reads “I hate stars as brand ambassadors, because they rarely know anything about the product or it’s technology”..

Personally I hated seeing him all over the place because it makes me feel that Videocon is just hiding their ‘not up to the mark’ product behind Abhishek bachan’s face.

Well, yes, to some extent its understandable that placing Abhishek all over can irritate a lot people..exp. coz he’s a flop actor and has a very little fan base..on top that, pushing his face into ours everywhere on the site..won;t do any god for Viedocon D2H…

i checked gogole to see if Videocon D2H to see if there are any serious complaints against the company, and sadly there are..customer service comments are poor..even though the packages are great..I wanted to but the Diamond Pack..but read about the customer service…and have decided to opt for Tata Sky..even if that means paying a lil more than i would on D2H…

Good to know that you chose tatasky over any other DTH service. It’s one of the best in the market,. Good customer service (efficient? I wouldn’t say so), clear picture (atleast on my 21 inch TV). But sadly there are other problems. First the price, it’s just too expensive. I pay close to 450 a month. Second, it’s packages, the new ones are not only confusing but the customer usually ends up paying more. These packages are designed to add to their pocket than the customer. hello Mr. Kunal,
i am little bit confuse about comments on Videocon D2h becouse most of lines r about Abhishek & their customer service. but what about the quality (picture & sound)?
i have videocon d2h on my 50” plasma tv from 6 months but am not satisfy with their picture quality. on channel logos & news headlines below in screen, pixels r very poor. in fast moving scenes it always go fade.
d2h service engineer advise me to contact with plasma dealer.
Now i think tata sky would be the better option to get good picture quality, pls advise

Hello Kunal, this is a great article you have written and i would share your feelings. i am planning to purchase a Videocon D2H for my home. i have a 42″ LCD and wish to know if videocon would be able to give good image quality. I am particularly disturbed about the pixel distortion as some people have mentioned in the comments. i know this chain is pretty close and over the time since it was introduced to date, it would have improved (i think), i wish to know, would you recommend me buying this product? my criteria are:
    Low cost
    Picture Quality
    Customer Service.

please rate this product on these grounds for me if you can, also any other grounds which you consider important, and mention, would be highly appreciated.

    Hi Raman,

I have personally been using Tatasky for years, and if you have gone through my blog I have written posts about how tatasky is expensive when compared to other DTH Providers. But honestly, I believe that it is one of the best in India, next to that is Reliance BIG TV and then probably Airtel DTH. This I say in terms of quality of service and customer satisfaction.

About your question and my experience with Videocon: I really haven’t used Videocon DTH, but have seen a number of demo’s in retail outlets. Frakly, It has failed to impress me. I was able to notice every single pixel on the the regular SD transmission. Not really sure how HD is. (Tatasky has amazing HD Clarity and I can vouch for that, not compared any other operators yet).

Recommendation: I would never recommend any Videocon product more because of the not so responsive & Irresponsible customer service. They didn’t reply to my sales query I posted online (It was their chance to convince), that says enough. If you are planning to get a SD Box, do not buy videocon, better option would be to pay extra bucks and get a tatasky or BIG TV or even Airtel if you don’t reallyc are about too much customer service. HD – I would still only recommend market leaders in Tatasky, BIG and Airtel.

Hope this helps. Make your choice only after seeing the demo (on a 42″ LCD TV).

Videocon D2H has the worst service, in terms of communicating with customers over the phone and or email the executives use harsh language and their behavior is not at all good.
The company, its dealers and the customer department hide many things from customers, the company doesn’t educate people about the services. When their mistakes are caught by customers, the phone gets disconnected and emails remain unanswered. I am repenting for taking this service. Neither the company website provided all the true and detailed answers.
My suggestion is not to go for any products of Videocon.

Videocon D2H sells satellite TVs (yes those with integrated STB). The TVs have locked STB means if you don’t want to stay with d2h, it is just extra hump to the TV. Though, the STB has functions to edit satellite management and capable to work with any operator; they have blocked transponder scanning in software. Only d2h satellite and transponder works. If you want to switch to other operator or want to watch FTA channels, needs separate STB. It is like moment your d2h subscription expires, you can see only a blue screen of your TV (no FTA channels, no doordarshan nothing!!!). DO NOT BUY IT.

Is it worth paying for HD STB considering the less number of channels that the providers are giving…max is 22..also many programs are not reorded with HD Video camera till now….so what is the point in paying 1000 bucks more for just 10-20 channels out of which you don’t watch 5-10…..also monthly HD access fee….

Please enlighten us Kunal with your expert advise on this issue.
